Unfortunately, the weather wasn`t cooperating. It had rained the evening before, along with that morning, making the event more of a "mud" breaking as a few had mentioned. Regardless, September 19th was the date for the ceremony at 1515 Carmen Drive on the north side of town and just off Elm Street and I-94, and spirits were high for all who attended.

If you`re unfamiliar with the project, the shelter currently resides in a very cramped area in an old factory on Mechanic Street---one where they are even unable to keep dogs. The new facility will be approximately 9100 square feet and have space enough for up to 100 animals.

Set for an opening sometime next April, he majority of this project is being funded by donations. And the society is still a few hundred thousand dollars short. Pledges and donations may be make by calling (517) 788-6587.

In addition, a fund-raiser called PAWS IN THE PARK will take place at Ella Sharp Park between 12:00 noon and 4:00pm October 7, 2001.

Families are invited to attend and enjoy an entertaining afternoon in Park (along with their well-mannered dogs) to help the Cascades Humane Society.

Dogs and their owners may compete in a variety of contests including the Obstacle Course and Doggy Poker Run. At 1:30 four-legged athletes will compete in the 2001 Frisbee Disc Championship. Prizes will also be awarded for categories such as Cutest Puppy and Best Talker!

There is no entry fee for competition and no admission charge for spectators, but any contributions to the Cascades Humane Society will we very much appreciated!
