A GREAT TURNOUT FOR LAS VEGAS NIGHT
by Captain Jackson

Diane Cerqueira was visibly on edge. It was a quarter to eight and already Bullinger`s Banquet room was almost full, and the line to get in reached the main entrance. Though not scheduled to begin until eight, The Cascades Humane Society`s LAS VEGAS NIGHT was already looking to become a success.

Diane, one of the winners of the 2001 Jackson Citizen Patriot Citizen of the Year awards, along with Humane Society Director of Development Scott Schmidt, have been taking turns coordinating fund raising events for the Society`s new facility. The 9,000 plus square foot building will be located on Carmen Drive, just off I-94. But building, and moving from the current 650 square foot location isn`t as easy as it may sound. You see, all operating expenses for the society come from private funds, as is the cost of the new building.

With a price tag of over $1.3 million, they are still almost two hundred fifty thousand dollars short. And the completion date looms ever closer. That`s where events such as LAS VEGAS NIGHT have made a difference.

In addition, Scott Schmidt is a member of the Rock and Roll band The QUIVERS which has appeared in public in an effort to solicit contributions. Also in the works for this spring, according to volunteer Nancy O`Keffe, are two bowling events.

With a few score volunteers, sponsorship from Silver Foam Distributing and a donated banquet room from Bullinger`s, LAS VEGAS NIGHT turned out to be quite a financial success. Even many of the attendees were more than generous. Amanda Emmet, who won the last 50/50 drawing valued at fifty seven dollars, only asked for twenty dollars to cover her expenses. Even then, as she later told this reporter, "I ended up with less than I started with, but I had a good time."

But just how great a financial success was it? So much so that another one is tentatively planned for March 1st between 7:30pm and 12:30am. In fact, the total profit after expenses was $5,327.29 with another $365.00 provided as donations in the canister at the front table.

And that`s what the evening was all about. Having a good time and leaving The Cascades Humane Society`s building fund a little richer.

EDITORS NOTE:
Becuase the event was so successful, the CASCADES HUMANE SOCIETY will be repeating the event Friday, March 1st (again at Bullinger`s) between 7:30pm and 12:30am. For more information call Diane Cerqueira at 787-0541.
