Labor day is supposed to symbolize the end of summer, though summer will not end for weeks. It is also supposed to be the last weekend we have to "get away from it all" before we prepare to "settle in" for the long winter.

But in Jackson many people now stay home for this traditional "end of summer" holiday. And this is all thanks to Junior Achievement. It`s called SUMMERFEST.

The event traditionally runs each year the Friday and Saturday of Labor Day weekend in downtown Jackson, during which thousands of people visit for the many different events.

Friday, August 31st brought people to the event for the many bands, including the rising vocalist Debi Jordan, local great Mike Kavanaugh and Megan Hurley---possibly the next Brittany Spears. At the other end of Michigan Avenue was the annual "Bed Race", a reason alone to attend the event. In addition, the carnival rides were quite active with plenty of "fair food" in abundance!

But Saturday will be the big day with the Mini-Grand Prix running all day. These high tech "go karts" will be racing in different heats throughout the day to amaze the crowds and raise money for the great JA cause. But that''''''''s not all.

Music continues from 10:00am through 9:00pm and the parking lot next to the County Tower building has imported tons of sand and will be the site of the first SUMMERFEST "beach volleyball" game. What more could a beach bum ask for?

Leave Jackson for a holiday trip somewhere else? Even if it were not for the high cost of gas, heavy traffic and even higher lodging rates, SUMMERFEST alone has been reason enough for many locals to "vacation" at home, not to mention the number of "out of towners" who visit.

And if that is not enough reason to celebrate Labor Day Weekend in Jackson, many local attractions such as The Michigan Theatre, The Space Center and Ella Sharp Park Museum will be open free of charge on Monday. What better way to spend the last holiday weekend of the summer?
